Who We Are
For Brian David Stevens, superheroes were never just stories in comics or on screens. They were larger than life – inspirational role models who faced extraordinary challenges with selflessness, and changing the world through their examples.
Growing up in leg braces and confined to a body cast as a result of Legg Calves Perthes (a childhood hip disorder), Brian spent years disappearing into the exploits of the characters who kept him company. Having drawn strength and inspiration from the stories that sustained him through his treatment and recovery, Brian went on to create superheroes of his own for his college newspaper cartoon page after which, having overcome his physical challenges, he served in the US Navy.
Having been raised by a real-life hero in his single mother, Brian eventually returned to his home town of Marlborough, Massachusetts, where he met and married his wife, Kathy – a hero in her own right, having undergone open-heart surgery as a teenager. But it wasn’t until they started a family of their own that Brian’s experience with superheroes took on a profound new turn.
Their son Brian Mathias was born with a severe facial deformity, requiring dozens of reconstructive surgeries – beginning when he was just twelve weeks old. Their second child, their daughter Samantha Marcia, was born with profound progressive Down Syndrome, one of the most diminished cases of the disorder ever seen.
Brian and Kathy saw the courage with which Brian faced his surgeries, and watched him grow to face all challenges with strength and humor. They watched as Samantha defied the prognoses of doctors to learn to sit up, and move of her own free will – as well as communicate and laugh and show a capacity for love and joy that continues to take their breath away – and inspire all who meet her. And Samantha has inspired many, in both her role as an Ambassador for the Global Down Syndrome Foundation and as a runway model.
Brian Mathias and Samantha Marcia rewrote the concept of ‘Superheroes’ for Brian. And when the family received an inheritance from Kathy’s father, the Stevens Family knew they wanted to acknowledge and give to the real Superheroes in our lives – those who face challenges most of us will never know, those who work tirelessly to help them live their dreams and achieve their goals, and those who seek to raise awareness of these extraordinary and inspirational people in this world.
“A rising awareness lifts all hopes”
The Stevens Family Foundation was founded for the purpose of honoring, entertaining and empowering those who face challenges most of us will never know, those who work tirelessly to help them live their dreams and achieve their goals, and those who seek to raise awareness of these extraordinary and inspirational people in this world.
With Samantha Marcia Stevens as its core inspiration, the Foundation places special emphasis on the needs and dreams of children and young adults with disabilities physical, emotional, social and/or economic, as well as providing support for the non-profit organizations who serve them – all heroes in their own right.
Through their philanthropy, The Stevens Family Foundation works to raise awareness and help provide these Superheroes with their most powerful voices, that they may better inspire us all to become our best selves.
